Starting the last season now -- I can finally understand your comment about the series being 'ahead of its time'. Gotta completely agree. I would be surprised if it didn't influence the re-imagined BSG; there are a handful of parallels that I noticed, and the general gritty tone is utterly different from
Star Trek. (Aside from DS9, but that's pretty much the black sheep of the ST family.)
Sheridan really turned out great -- I'm so damned glad that they replaced O'Hare. There are some slow spots in the series, where the momentum sags, but when it fires up again...it
really hits home.
The Face of the Enemy, for example, really served as a punch to the gut after the slow patches preceeding it.
This scene in particular was brilliant on every level -- music, dialogue, acting, the way it was shot, the prolonged beating, etc. I felt sick after watching it, such was the emotional heftiness. Some of my other favourites, across the seasons:
And The Sky Full Of Stars, The Coming of Shadows, In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum, Divided Loyalties, The Long Twilight Struggle, Passing Through Gethsemane, A Late Delivery From Avalon, Walkabout, Z’Ha’Dum, Intersections in Real Time.
On another note, I'm not sure if it's just me, but I reckon G'Kar has pretty much the coolest voice
ever.
So many things to analyse in this series -- if I had a site I would probably even rewatch it all just to post up reviews of each episode there. If I ever learn how to make one I may just do that someday, would be enjoyable.
